If you maintain inventory that has variable attributes (commonly size, color, or style) in NetSuite, then you are probably familiar with matrix items. Matrix items are an excellent option for organizations that sell products which are fundamentally similar in form (i.e. t-shirts) but differ in one or two categories (i.e. size and color), as they allow you to group all of the related the child items under a common parent. While these capabilities are extremely useful for products with options that need to be tracked distinctly, there are some cases where item options need to be captured on transactions for informational purposes and are not actually separate products. In these scenarios, transaction item options might be a better fit. In this blog post, I’ll provide an overview of transaction item options to help you decide if it’s the right approach for your requirements.

When making bulk updates to existing records in NetSuite, there are two approaches that are typically used – mass updates and CSV imports. Depending on the specific updates being made and the frequency with which the updates will be performed, you may find that one approach is better than the other. In this post, I’ll share key differences between the approaches along with a few practical use cases for each.

NetSuite releases two system upgrades per year to all accounts, often providing new functionality within existing features in addition to launching brand new capabilities. Prior to being upgraded to the new release, all accounts are given access to a release preview environment that allows users to preview the changes in a sandbox-like setting. Detailed documentation describing all changes that are included as part of the new release are also provided at this time and can be accessed from the New Release portlet and in SuiteAnswers. In this post, I’m going to share the five changes that are being made as part of 2021.1 that I am most excited about.

For organizations that buy and resell products from overseas, knowing which products are on the water and which purchase orders they were ordered on can be challenging, especially when tracking changes in ownership. I’ve seen a few businesses that have implemented complex customizations for tracking these shipments and their associated asset value, without realizing that NetSuite offers native functionality for inbound shipment tracking.

One of NetSuite’s hidden gems is their robust catalog of SuiteApps, which are add-on bundles built by NetSuite that enhance existing functionality and are often available completely free of charge. SuiteApps range from custom reporting to meet country-specific tax requirements to improved employee and subsidiary navigation interfaces to a drag and drop tool for attaching files to records (one of my personal favorites). In today’s post, I’ll discuss the Effective Date Pricing SuiteApp, which allows you to schedule and automate pricing updates in your NetSuite environment.

The impact of the internet on how retailers do business cannot be overstated, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Retailers used to be reliant on physical inventory in on-site warehouses to fulfill orders, but a growing number of businesses never even see the products that they are selling as drop-shipping has become a common approach for meeting customer demand in a timely manner. NetSuite offers native support for on-site fulfillment, drop shipments, and special orders, as well as mixing and matching all three approaches simultaneously. In this post, I’ll discuss how drop shipments and special orders are handled in NetSuite and how to best leverage the available configuration options to meet your business needs.

One of my favorite features of NetSuite is the way that it tracks bidirectional email activity for emails generated from within the system. Having visibility into communication activity related to a customer, vendor, or specific transaction record is an invaluable resource, but only if the initial outbound email is delivered as intended. NetSuite offers the ability to configure DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), which is essentially a digital signature within the code of your email that can be read by internet service providers to help identify spam and improve the deliverability of your messages. While there are some slightly technical aspects of setting up a DKIM entry, even a non-technical user can do it once they understand the process. In this post, I’ll take the mystery out of configuring DKIM in your NetSuite environment.

For organizations that buy and sell physical goods, being able to efficiently and accurately move inventory within warehouse(s) is critical. Knowing exactly how many units of each product you have in a particular location and/or bin drives both purchasing and sales activity, so it is extremely important that changes to inventory are recorded correctly and in a timely manner.
