SuiteApp Overview: Work Instructions and Traveler

Written by Jose Moreno, Consultant | Mar 13, 2025 4:00:00 PM

The Work Instructions and Traveler SuiteApp extends NetSuite’s manufacturing capabilities by providing clients with the ability to define manufacturing level work instructions for each operation step , which can then the printed and shared with shop floor personnel. The printed traveler document can be used to outline process notes and detailed step by step instructions, including assigned components, for each operation step. We’ll take a look at the SuiteApp and how to install it in a NetSuite instance. We will first cover prerequisites.

Prerequisites

The following features must be enabled prior to installing the SuiteApp:

  • Work orders
  • Advanced Bill of Materials
  • Manufacturing Work in Progress
  • Manufacturing Routing and Work Center
  • SuiteAnalytics WorkBook
  • Advanced PDF/HTML Templates
  • Custom Records
  • Client SuiteScript
  • Server SuiteScript

The main target audience for this SuiteApp are clients who currently use NetSuite’s WIP and routing functionality, as work instructions are defined on the routing record. Once the features have been enabled, navigate to the SuiteApp Marketplace, and look for the SuiteApp:

After the SuiteApp is installed, you may notice a new tab on the manufacturing routing record named Work Instructions, and a new button on the work order record named Print Traveler. Accessing the Work Instructions tab allows you to define process notes and step by step instructions by operation. You can also embed URLs for additional references, and if your file is an image, you can have the SuiteApp print that image on the traveler PDF document:

After defining work instructions, you can print the traveler PDF. NetSuite provides a canned template which can be customized by a developer. The traveler PDF can be printed through the individual work order record by clicking the Print Traveler button, or by batches by navigating to Reports > Manufacturing > Generate Traveler:

A traveler can be printed ad-hoc by clicking the Print Traveler button on the work order.

Or by navigating to Reports > Manufacturing > Generate Traveler. Search filters are available to help you short-list the work orders you want to see, and you can generate more than one traveler at a time using this method.

A sample of the printed document is shown below:
