NetSuite Drop Down vs List

This article is geared towards NetSuite Administrators and NetSuite super users. Personally, I’ve worked on quite a few implementations and early on, one of the NetSuite behaviors that stumped me was how some environments had a drop-down list versus others had the predictive search text or double down arrow to open a list. Specifically on any transaction when entering items.

Instead of having a double drop-down arrow as so:

The items are selected using a single drop-down arrow which produces all the items in a list. The field does not allow you to type the first few characters of the item name or display name, instead users are required to drop-down and select the items.

Personally, I prefer double drop-down arrows. To fix this issue you’ll need to have a role with permission to edit General Preferences, Administrator by default has permission, but other roles can do it as well given the right permissions.

Navigate to: Setup > Company > General Preferences

Once the preferences page is open, find the “Maximum Entries in Dropdowns” field. The field must have a number less than the total items in the system. In larger environments with hundreds of items, this usually isn’t an issue since the default is set to 200.

To update, simply change the number to less than the total items, customer records, vendor records, etc. (anywhere the single drop-down happens) and click Save. The result will be double drop-down arrows and the ability to type in the beginning characters of the record.
